Dutasteride, a medication given for men with an enlarged prostate, has been shown to reduce the risk of prostate cancer by 23%. These results are from a four year trial that studied over 8,000 men, ages 50-75, for 4 years. Previously, another prostate medication called finasteride, was shown to decrease the risk by 25%. While this data is very encouraging, these medications currently have not received FDA approval for the prevention of prostate cancer. If desired, the risks and benefits of taking these medications for the prevention of prostate cancer should be discussed with your doctor.
