Body Mass Index

Body Mass Index (BMI) uses your height and weight to assess the impact of your weight on your health. Your risk for many illnesses, including diabetes and heart disease increases, as your BMI gets higher. Having a BMI that is too low can also be unhealthy. Use a BMI chart to determine your own BMI.

When your BMI is 18.5 to 24.9:
This is a healthy weight range. It is important for you to be active and balance your eating habits to keep fit.

When your BMI is 25 to 29.9:
Your risk of developing health problems begins to increase. Eating healthy foods and increasing your physical activity can make a big difference now. Being more active can also improve your fitness level, give you more energy and help you enjoy a longer and healthier life. You may want to make some changes to your eating and activity habits if any of the following statements are true:

  • You have recently gained 10 or more pounds
  • You are not getting enough regular physical activity
  • Your diet is high in sugar in fats and low in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains
  • Your waist circumference is over 40” (men) and 35” (women)

When your BMI is 30 or Higher:
You continue to increase your chances of developing certain health problems.

What can you do?
Talk to your healthcare provider about your weight and treatment options. They can help you learn to set weight management goals, eat healthy foods and increase your physical activity.
